Breakfasts

Typical Russian breakfasts are significantly different from what one would eat for breakfast in other countries. As a rule, it is a kasha (hot cereal) made with milk. It can be made out of any meal or groats and is usually sweet and served hot with butter.
Other typical breakfast options include omelet or fried eggs, boiled eggs, pancakes or blintzes with sweet berry preserves. Cottage (farmer) cheese is very popular on its own as well as the dishes made with it – cottage cheese pancakes or souffl-like casserole. Russian sandwiches are different from typical American ones: a slice of bread is spread with butter and then topped with a slice of ham, lunchmeat, cheese – separately or all together. Russian sandwiches are open-faced.

Typical breakfasts are rich and nutritious. They’re followed by hot tea or coffee.
